Amongst the hustle and bustle of this community are historical and cultural landmarks. The first Christian Church built by western missionaries in Hawaii in 1820, Mokuaikaua, is located on Ali'i Drive. The Hulihe'e Palace, also located on Ali'i Drive, was the former vacation home of Hawaiian royalty, it is now a museum run by the Daughters of Hawaii, showcasing furniture and artifacts of a bygone era. Kona is also home to the Ellison Onizuka Space Center and the Hawaii Natural Energy Labs.
Most of the population in North Kona lives in the mountainside towns between Honaunau and Holualoa along a stretch of road called Mamalahoa Highway. Up until the early 1970's the population was less than 7,000. Today the population is around 40,000 and rapidly growing. Recently, many major retail outlets have found their home here including Costco, Macy's, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes and Borders.
